Shadow Switch Beauty Hack

You know the pain, when you’re doing your eyeshadow, you switch brushes, only to find your matte brown eye has now got pink shimmer in it from the last time you used it… NIGHTMARE!

When you’ve spent what feels like hours blending and perfecting your eyeshadow, to ruin it from an easily avoidable situation, is annoying to say the least. That’s where shadow switch* comes in, and trust me, it will be your new best friend.

img_4792IMG_4800.JPG

Essentially, shadow switch is a coarse textured sponge in a tin. However it is actually so much more than that. Aside from the adorable packaging, the product works wonders, such a simple yet effective product.

img_4742

I wrote a blogpost on how I clean my makeup brushes and I feel like this is the next installment in that series. No other method is as effective as shadow switch, it is super quick and your brushes don’t need time to dry, they are ready to use immediately.

img_4751

I feel a bit like I’m stating the obvious when telling you how to use this product because it’s so simple to use. You literally just swirl your dirty eyeshadow brush into the sponge and voila! The brush is clean and you can use it without any worry of the previous colour transferring.

You can see below how effective it is, the brush had dark brown eyeshadow on it, then after swirling for a couple of seconds, it was fully clean again.

img_4758img_4761img_4763

I’m absolutely delighted with my shadow switch, I wasn’t particularly overwhelmed by the prospect of it, but after testing it out I can confirm that I really do love it. It’s been a firm favourite in my morning makeup routine for the past few weeks now, I reach for it every morning, at £5.99 it is super affordable as well!

Shadow switch is the start of something amazing from Beauty Essentials, they are releasing a bunch of new products soon, which will be available from Sephora. They are currently only available on Amazon but big things are coming from them very soon so keep your eyes peeled…

Do you have any beauty hacks that I just NEED to know?

Misconceptions of Aspergers

Today’s post is on a more personal topic, I am going to be discussing Aspergers syndrome, which myself and 700,000 people in the UK alone have been diagnosed with. Any health condition or disability is a serious matter, but I am going to make this post more humorous, so please take it with a pinch of salt. Remember, I am not trying to offend anybody, as I myself have Aspergers.

For those of you who may not know, Aspergers is high-functioning autism and is a different condition to autism itself. In this post I am going to be addressing Aspergers, some many apply to Autism as well, but I am not focusing on that directly.

“People with autism are naughty” – Many people with autism get in trouble, suspended or excluded from school: this gives the image that people with autism are all badly behaved. For starters, often the people who do get in trouble, only do so as they struggle with school whether that be the academic or social side. However there are still a lot of people with autism who are not badly behaved, but they get branded as trouble because of this misconception. This “naughty” label is most often targeted at people with Autism, but as many people don’t know the different between autism and Aspergers, we can all get treated like this.

“People with autism are weird” – People with any form of autism see, hear and feel the world differently. A way I like to describe it is that “my brain is simply just wired differently”. Nobody is normal, you can’t define normal, but we often struggle with knowing what is the correct way to act. What is socially acceptable to say and how to act can often be a struggle for people like myself, it is something I am conscious of everyday, but occasionally I slip up and this really upsets me.

“How do you make it go away?” – Autism is a development disability, it has been a part of me since I was born, it will not simply go away. It isn’t like an illness, I can’t take tablets or have therapy so I wake up one day and its gone. Many people with Aspergers say that “it is a part of their identity”. I was diagnosed at the age of 15, that means I had 15 years of feeling alone and different in the world, so having a label is a reassurance for me. Many people with Aspergers like having a label as it makes them feel like they aren’t just “weird”.

“People with autism are rude” – Probably the biggest misconception of Aspergers is that we are rude or blunt. I promise you, we are not trying to be, it’s just how we are. I make a conscious effort in social situations to be engaging and polite, but sometimes I am blunt without realising it, which can make me appear as rude when I am really not. If you know somebody with autism, please cut them some slack, don’t think that they are being rude because they most likely did not intend to.

“You don’t look like you have autism” – Aspergers is called a “hidden disability” for a reason, we don’t walk around with it plastered across our forehead, most of us try to hide it for the fear of being judged. Aspergers and autism is different in everybody, we all fit on this thing called the autism spectrum, which basically measures how “autistic” you are. You do something called an ADOS which has different categories and your difficulties in each are measured.

“People with autism are unsociable” – Social situations when you have Aspergers can be one of the most frightening things. Being surrounded with people can make you feel even more alone because you feel so different and abnormal. I often avoid social situations for the fear of being misunderstood and portrayed wrongly. If you are in a social situation with somebody with autism, please engage in conversation with them, they will appreciate it so much and you will make them feel less like an outsider.

“Why are they acting like that?” – People with autism can have heightened senses. Personally, I am sensitive to sound and find it extremely difficult to deal with loud noises or particular sounds. Another person may find certain textures or tastes of food difficult whilst another may not be able to touch certain materials. If put in a situation with their difficulties, it can lead to abnormal behaviour because they physically can’t deal with it. For me, I tend to put my hands over my ears and rock, to others this may look strange but that is the only way I can cope if I can’t get out of the situation. Some children may have “tantrums” if autism isn’t diagnosed and their parents are unaware of their vulnerabilities, it will look like they are misbehaving, when in fact they are just very distressed. Linked here and here are two amazing videos which I feel portray really well how it feels to have heightened senses.

“People with autism are unintelligent” – This links in with “people with autism are naughty”, misbehaving and bad grades are associated, but both are in fact misconceptions. Autism itself often entails people having speech development issues whilst Aspergers is the “high-functioning” autism as these speech development issues are not present. People with Aspergers are very often highly intelligent, performing higher than the national average and excelling same-age children in their class. In fact, some of the most intelligent people in history, were suspected to have had Aspergers: Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Jane Austen, Charles Darwin and Thomas Jefferson.

I sincerely hope this post doesn’t offend anybody, and in fact, it was perhaps eye-opening or interesting to read. I very much enjoyed writing this post, the words kind of just spilled onto the page, I didn’t have to think hard about what to write. Sorry about the lack of photographs, I hate using images off the internet for the sake of it, yet didn’t know what I could photograph myself that fits the topic.

Please be honest, I won’t be insulted or anything like that, did you have any of these misconceptions before reading this post? Do you personally or know anybody who suffers with autism or aspergers?

Summer Lip Picks

FINAL 2

As sunglasses, shorts and floral dresses get rummaged out from the bottom of draws and wardrobes, you know that summer is finally here. The main tell tail for me, that summer is here, is that I will be an oily mess. My makeup slips and slides all over my face in the heat, so I most often opt for a light base, which gives me the opportunity to balance it out with a bold yet pretty lip.

FINAL 3

Bright or neutral, opaque or sheer, moisturising or matte – I have chosen seven lip colours to share with you that I will most certainly be wearing this summer. When choosing my summer lip picks, I noticed that a lot of brighter shades tend to have a sheen finish even though I personally prefer a matte lip for longevity. To combat this, I simply dust a loose, translucent powder over the top and voila – simple as that!

FINAL 1

Left to right – Nars Brigitte, W7 Glamorous, Too Faced Debutante, Makeup Revolution Sweet Boy With a Big Mouth, Benefit Wing Woman, Clinique Plum Pop & W7 Spontaneous

thumb_IMG_1287_1024

Nars Audacious Lipstick in Brigitte – A moisturising peachy pink which is very comfortable on the lips

W7 Chunky Lips in Glamorous – A pinky lilac lip crayon with a creamy formula

IMG_2411

Too Faced Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick in Debutante – A metallic peach with gold flecks

Makeup Revolution Ultra Velour Lip Cream in Sweet Boy With a Big Mouth – A barbie pink lip cream with the most incredible smell of vanilla cupcakes

IMG_2417

Benefit Hydra-Smooth Lip Colour in Wing Woman – A moisturising, sheer, peachy nude with gold flecks

IMG_2424

Clinique Pop Lip Colour and Primer in Plum Pop – A dusky plum which is semi-matte yet moisturising

W7 Chunky Lips in Spontaneous – A pinky coral with a moisturising formula

I hope you’re all having a wonderful summer, whether you are at home or have been away. If I’m being honest, I’m already excited for Autumn/Winter, which also means the return of berry lips! Perhaps I will do an Autumn lip picks blogpost..

What is your summer lip pick? Which lipstick do you reach for time and time again during summer?

Life Update: Honesty

Aloha my beautiful readers, it has been a little while, hasn’t it. I apologise, I know everybody does, but I truly am sorry. I blog and vlog honestly, so I am going to continue being honest with you, life just got a little bit on top on me.

IMG_2793

IMG_2771

We moved house, a big change in itself, but we are now living on a 7am-7pm building site. This means I can’t film videos until after 7pm, because let’s be honest, I’m not going to get up at 5am to film videos, I love making youtube videos but I’m not crazy. Then… A) There’s only a certain amount of videos you can film in that short window after 7pm B) After 7pm I just want to chill out, have baths, watch youtube, edit content and have quality family time.

IMG_2808

If I’m being honest, again, “Where there’s a will there’s a way” comfortably fits this situation. I lost the will, motivation and inclination to create content whether that be on my blog or youtube channel. I wasn’t feeling fully myself and I dont want to create content that isn’t 100% me.

IMG_2786

I don’t watch Pretty Little Liars but the quote “I’m back bitches – A” feels very appropriate. However it should be “-R” because I’m Ruby and all. Ah, I digress, have you missed my rambling, probably not, just pretend you have.

IMG_2828

Right, so I’ve decided I’m not going to pile so much pressure on myself, I am one of those people who beat myself up massively if I don’t achieve the 1000 things on my to-do list that day. Blogging and vlogging is supposed to be a bit of fun, it isn’t my job but oh how I wish it was, however there is no obligation to put content out there, I solely do it for the thrill of it. I believe if you’re doing what you love, it shines through, I don’t want to be forcing content out like a machine as I feel my audience will pick up on this.

IMG_2787

What next then I bet you’re wondering. In a couple of weeks I am going to New York, I can barely contain my excitement, I am hoping to create content about my trip once I get back. Between now and then, I’m trying to plan our trip so we can get the most out of our 7 days, whilst focusing on myself and my own wellbeing. Then in September, I will start attending a sixth form, which currently fills me with a lot of anxiety at the prospect of not knowing anybody at all. I hope to still produce content whilst doing A-levels, but on a much smaller scale, instead of every day more like a couple of times a week.

IMG_2821

I have throughly enjoyed writing this chattier post, I would love to do a weekly round-up post, perhaps on a Monday morning. It would sum up my week and I could link to all the content I uploaded that week – blogposts, videos and perhaps social media posts. Please do let me know if that is something you would be interested in seeing.

IMG_2824

IMG_2833

I appreciate every single person who reads my blog and wish we could be the best of friends and go for coffee. Unfortunately for geographical reasons, we can’t, but I would love to get to know you all a bit better. Please share with me down in the comments something good or bad or exciting or annoying or funny, absolutely anything, that has happened to you recently. I would truly love to know!

Ruby Red R0ses xoxo

PS. Hope you like the photographs, I snapped them one evening whilst on a dog walk, I am so happy with how they turned out.

My Highlighter Collection

Highlighting has blown up in the beauty world, a completely matte base used to be the desired look, but now looking like a glazed donut is the new in thing. I’m overall really happy with my highlighter collection, I feel like I have a wide range of products and I hope this post inspires your wish list or for you to root to the back of your makeup collection!  I’m planning on filming the full face of highlighter challenge for my youtube channel so make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss out on that.

thumb_IMG_1345_1024

Makeup Revolution radiance highlighter palette –  Very subtle highlighters, the first two shades are perfect to mix together and use as a setting powder. The slight shimmer prevents your face from looking flat like matte powders can cause. The bronze shade works well as a bronzer, a subtle highlight and an eyeshadow.

Bare Minerals warm radiance face colour – I rarely use this as I find loose powders such a faff, however, it does give a lovely warmth to your cheekbones. It is very warm toned and pigmented so a light hand is needed.

MAC soft and gentle mineralise skinfinish  – A cult beauty product that lives up to the hype. A beautiful, golden highlight that has the perfect amount of pigmentation. It has a smooth texture and doesn’t highlight uneven skin texture.

Body Shop honey bronze golden highlighting dome – A very creamy consistency that works well for strobing under foundation or as a subtle and healthy looking highlight.

Makeup Revolution radiant shimmer brick – In terms of quality and price, this is hands down my favourite, at £3 I wonder how it is so amazing! The top two shades are my favourite, they are insanely pigmented but not chalky or have a lumpy texture. When all swirled together, they make a beautiful shimmery bronzer, perfect for summertime.

The Balm Mary Lou manizer – Another cult beauty product that lives up to its hype. Mary Lou is an incredible champagne shade with such finely milled shimmer that it looks perfectly smooth on the skin. I use Mary Lou constantly and an indent hasn’t even been made into the powder.

Nars copacabana – Copacabana is insanely pigmented but as it is a liquid, it blends out beautifully and doesn’t look cakey or too much. It is a very pale pink iridescent highlight so I feel the it would work really well on pale skin as it would actually look like a highlight not a bronzer or blush.

thumb_IMG_1358_1024thumb_IMG_1359_1024thumb_IMG_1365_1024

Left to right; three shades in the radiance palette, Mary Lou, soft and gentle, radiant shimmer brick, warm radiance face colour, golden highlighter dome, copacabana.

thumb_IMG_1369_1024

I tend to wear a couple of these alternatively, so after writing this, I am definitely going to make a conscious effort to try and use some of the others more often.

What is your favourite highlighter? Have you caught on to the highlighting craze?
